Thus, quantified abundance profiles represent an aggregation of protein localization across different cell cycle stages and cellular states. Spatial (or organelle) proteomics is the study of the localisation of proteins inside cells. The sub-cellular compartment can be organelles, i.e. structures defined by lipid bi-layers,macro-molecular assemblies of proteins and nucleic acids or large protein complexes. Highly resolved spatial proteomics has the potential to define the complex cellular and molecular architecture of the human brain in health and disease. (16,17) Most of our approximately 20 000 genes are expressed in the brain in a temporospatial manner, and many demonstrate alternative splicing in different brain regions, hinting at the existence of a very complex, highly compartmentalized brain proteome.
